Racontes moi ce mot étrange et difficile à prononcer
Que je porte depuis que je suis née.
Racontes moi le vieil empire et le trait de mes yeux bridés,
Qui disent mieux que moi ce que tu n’oses dire.
Je ne sais de toi que des images de la guerre,
Un film de Coppola, [et] des hélicoptères en colère ...

Un jour, j’irai là bas, un jour dire bonjour à ton âme.
Un jour, j’irai là bas [pour] te dire bonjour, Vietnam.

Racontes moi ma couleur, mes cheveux et mes petits pieds,
Qui me portent depuis que je suis née.
Racontes moi ta maison, ta rue, racontes moi cet inconnu,
Les marchés flottants et les sampans de bois.
Je ne connais de mon pays que des photos de la guerre,
Un film de Coppola, [et] des hélicoptères en colère ...

Les temples et les Boudhas de pierre pour mes pères,
Les femmes courbées dans les rizières pour mes mères,
Dans la prière, dans la lumière, revoir mes frères,
Toucher mon âme, mes racines, ma terre...

Kể em nghe tiếng lạ lùng khó gọi

Mà em đã mang từ thuở chào đời ,

Triều đại và mắt xếch của giống nòi

 Điều mà Người không dám nói thành lời .

 Em chỉ hiểu Người qua những hình ảnh

Của chiếc trực thăng quay cuồng nổi giận ,

Trong cảnh điêu tàn khói lửa chiến tranh

Nơi quê hương em chưa biết một lần .

 Em sẽ về chào đón hồn quê em ,

Em về chào đón nước Việt ngàn khơi , 

Kể nghe mái tóc, màu da, chân bé

Mà em đã mang khi mới chào đời .

 Kể mái nhà tranh, con đường làng 

Và nói những điều em chưa được biết ,

Như các chợ nổi trên chiếc thuyền nan

Em chưa được nhìn thấy và quen biết .

 Em chỉ biết quê hương qua bức ảnh

Của chiếc trực thăng quay cuồng nổi giận ,

Trong cảnh điêu tàn khói lửa chiến tranh

Nơi quê hương em chưa biết một lần .

 Em sẽ về chào đón hồn quê em

Em về chào đón nước nhà Việt Nam

Em về thăm viếng chùa miểu giùm cha

Thay mẹ thăm dân cấy lúa ngoài đồng 

Gặp lại những người anh trong ánh sáng

Găp lại các anh trong buổi kinh cầu

Thấy hồn quê em nơi nhà yêu dấu

Hiểu được nguồn gốc, biết được giang san

Em sẽ về chào đón hồn quê em,

Em về chào nước Việt Nam muôn đời.

I will visit the temples and the of Buddha’s statues for my fathers

I will visit the women working in the rice fields for my mothers

I will see my brothers in the prayers, and in the lights

I can touch my country, I can know my origin and see my land…

Someday, I will go there, someday to say hello to my country

Someday, I will go there.to say hello to Vietnam
